When treating wastewater in a wastewater treatment plant, the thickening tank is one of the important treatment stages. The function of the thickening tank is to separate and concentrate the solids and organic substances in the wastewater using physical and chemical methods, thus reducing the burden of subsequent treatment. However, when the effluent is found to turn white at the outlet of the thickening tank, the cause needs to be promptly identified and corresponding measures taken to deal with it.
There are several possible reasons for the whitening of the outlet of the thickening tank of a wastewater treatment plant, as follows:
1. too much suspended particulate matter
Concentration tank contains a large number of suspended particulate matter, such as iron oxide, aluminum oxide, etc. These particulate matter will make the sewage turbid and look like it has turned white. These suspended particulate matter may come from the wastewater entering the wastewater treatment plant, or they may be generated during the treatment process.
2. pH is too high or too low
Too high or too low pH in the thickener can cause the effluent to turn white. When the pH is too high, the suspended particulate matter in the effluent will gellate, making the effluent cloudy. When the pH is too low, the metal ions in the sewage will precipitate, which will also make the sewage turn white.
3. The water temperature is too high or too low
The water temperature in the thickener is too high or too low, which will also cause the effluent to turn white. When the water temperature is too high, it will make the microorganisms in the concentration tank multiply too fast, thus making the organic substances in the sewage decompose too fast and cannot be fully precipitated. When the water temperature is too low, the decomposition of organic substances in the sewage will slow down, making it difficult to precipitate the suspended particles in the sewage.
4. Improper addition of chemical agents
Concentration tank usually need to add some chemicals, such as flocculants, ferric chloride, etc., in order to accelerate the precipitation of solids in the sewage. However, if too much or too little chemicals are added, it will cause the sewage to turn white. Adding too many chemicals will cause the suspended particulate matter in the sewage to agglomerate into large particles, causing the sewage to become turbid. And adding too little agent will not enable the solids in the sewage to be fully precipitated.

5. Equipment operation is not normal
Improper operation of the pump or agitator in the thickener can also cause the sewage to turn white. If the pump does not mix the effluent sufficiently, the solids in the effluent will not be distributed evenly, thus causing the effluent to turn white. If the agitator does not operate properly, it cannot mix the suspended particulate matter in the effluent sufficiently, which will also lead to the effluent turning white.
To sum up, there are many reasons for the white outlet of the thickening tank of the sewage treatment plant, which need to be analyzed and dealt with according to the specific situation. In the treatment of sewage, we need to pay attention to the maintenance and management of equipment, but also need to reasonably add chemicals to maintain the stability of water quality in the thickener, so as to ensure the smooth implementation of subsequent treatment.
