I. Nonionic Flocculants
This type of high-molecular flocculant is a polymer synthesized without introducing charged groups. Key examples include polyacrylamide (PAM), polyethylene oxide (PEO), polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP), polyvinyl methyl ether (PVME), and polyalkylene phenol epoxides. Nonionic polyacrylamide can be prepared through polymerization methods such as aqueous solution polymerization, precipitation polymerization, and inverse suspension polymerization.
Traditional aqueous polyacrylamide polymerization systems exhibit high viscosity, low molecular weight, and low solid content. By adding a dispersing agent like polyethylene glycol (PEG) to the polymerization system, the solid content can be increased to 1/5, and the polymer molecular weight can exceed 3 million.
II. Amphoteric Polymer Flocculants
Due to the limitations in application scope, nonionic polymer flocculants are gradually being replaced by water-soluble amphoteric polymer flocculants. Amphoteric flocculants contain both positively and negatively charged groups on their polymer chains, making them suitable for wastewater containing coexisting anions and cations. They exhibit excellent flocculation and sludge dewatering performance, with a wide pH adaptability and strong salt tolerance, making them a current research hotspot.
Compared to other flocculants, amphoteric polymer flocculants show promising application prospects in the following aspects:
1. Sludge Dewatering: Sludge treated with amphoteric polymer flocculants demonstrates superior settling properties and lower moisture content in the filter cake.
2. Removal of Metal Ions: Since the anionic and cationic groups in their molecular structure can chelate metal ions and release them at the isoelectric point, these ions can be effectively separated and recovered using this property.
