Flocculation is the process by which suspended particles, already partially neutralized by coagulation, are further aggregated into larger clusters (flocs) by the addition of a high molecular weight flocculant. The flocculants are usually long chain polymers that are capable of adsorbing multiple particles, causing them to physically entangle and bridge together to form larger flocs.
Mechanism of flocculation: Mainly physical, i.e. by entanglement and bridging of polymer chains; Chemicals used in the flocculation process are high molecular weight organic polymers such as polyacrylamides; Flocculation is the aggregation of these neutralized small particles into larger flocs; Process sequence: Coagulation is usually performed first, followed by flocculation. This is because only when the particle charge is neutralized can the flocculant effectively bridge the particles into large flocs.
