The pollution and damage caused by wastewater from paper mills have garnered widespread attention. Due to the presence of refractory substances such as lignin and cellulose, high chromaticity, and a high content of fine colloidal particles in papermaking wastewater, the
polyaluminium chloride coagulation method is suitable for pretreatment or advanced treatment. Since paper pulp carries a negative charge, cationic polymeric coagulants are typically chosen. These coagulants exert effects such as compressing the double layer, adsorptive neutralization, adsorptive bridging, and netting, destabilizing the pollutants in the wastewater and aggregating them into large microflocculants, which can then be separated from the wastewater with good sedimentation performance.

The widely used coagulants in paper mills are
polymeric aluminum chloride (PAC) and polymeric aluminum ferric chloride (PFC). Not only are they cost-effective, but the sediment resulting from
PAC treatment can be reused as papermaking raw material, thus possessing high economic value. When the dosage of PAC and PFC is ≤30 mg/L, the activated sludge remains unaffected. Furthermore, the impact of PFC on activated sludge is less pronounced than that of
PAC, which is beneficial for subsequent activated sludge treatment. The experiment on
polyaluminium chloride (PAC) indicates that when using polyaluminium ferric chloride (PAFC) coagulant to treat papermaking wastewater, the wastewater treatment effect is better at a pH value of 8 and a dosage of 6 mL. At this point, the wastewater decolorization rate can reach 90%, and the CODCr removal rate can reach 43%. When using
polyaluminium chloride (PAC) coagulant to treat papermaking wastewater, the wastewater treatment effect is better at a pH value of 8 and a dosage of 6 mL. At this point, the wastewater decolorization rate can reach 78%, and the CODCr removal rate can reach 37%.
