The working principle of flocculants

Flocculants, also known as flocculating solidifiers, are non-hydrocarbon substances widely employed in water treatment, mining, and structural engineering. Their mode of operation and mechanism of action are as follows: Working Principle: Flocculants rely on the synergistic action of kinetic energy and flocculation effects. Kinetic energy generates surface tension within the solution, causing suspended particles to adhere to the water surface and form flocculent aggregates. The flocculation effect, meanwhile, reduces the contact area between particles and water while enhancing interparticle viscosity, preventing dispersion due to water flow or centrifugal force. This ultimately facilitates sedimentation to purify water quality. Mode of action: Adsorption: Flocculant molecules adsorb onto particle surfaces, where macromolecular compounds enhance interparticle interactions through attractive or repulsive forces, thereby promoting their aggregation into flocs. Neutralisation: The polarity or charged functional groups of flocculants neutralise the surface charges of particles, thereby weakening interparticle repulsive forces and promoting aggregation, making colloidal particles more readily settle. Spatial exclusion: The macromolecular aggregates formed by flocculant molecules occupy space, enhancing interparticle forces and promoting aggregation. Particle bridging: Flocculant molecules act as bridges connecting multiple particles to form aggregates, causing colloidal particles in a dispersed system to destabilise and settle. Coagulation and flocculation processes: Coagulation is the process whereby colloidal particles become destabilised and form minute aggregates, with mechanisms including compression of the double electric layer and adsorption-electrostatic neutralisation. Flocculation, conversely, is the process whereby destabilised colloids or suspended solids aggregate into larger flocs, categorised as anisotropic flocculation induced by Brownian motion and isotropic flocculation driven by external forces.
