In the wastewater treatment community, there is a saying: “Use the right chemicals, and the effluent won’t fail; use the wrong chemicals, and the treatment will fail miserably!” Among the numerous water treatment chemicals, cationic
polyacrylamide and anionic
polyacrylamide are considered “star players”. But did you know? When these two meet, it can be a “disaster”! Today, let’s reveal why they must never be mixed! 1. The chemical reaction of Yin and Yang meeting, like “heavenly thunder igniting earthly fire” Cationic
polyacrylamide carries a positive charge, akin to a group of “positive-charged little warriors,” adept at adsorbing negatively charged suspended particles in wastewater; whereas anionic
polyacrylamide carries a negative charge, capable of “holding hands” with positively charged impurities in wastewater to form clusters. When these two agents are mixed, it’s like the positive and negative poles are instantly connected – a large number of positive and negative charges will quickly undergo neutralization reactions! The molecular chains, which originally exert their flocculation advantages, will entangle and aggregate into coarse “knots,” not only losing their original ability to adsorb suspended particles but also directly producing visible precipitates, rendering the agents completely “ineffective”!

II. The “tragic” consequences of mixed use Imagine a factory mistakenly adding both cationic and anionic
polyacrylamide into the reaction tank simultaneously in an attempt to speed up wastewater treatment efficiency. As a result, instead of the anticipated clear water quality, a large amount of floating flocs and sediment at the bottom of the tank appeared, and the effluent quality seriously failed to meet standards! Worse still, these sediments blocked pipelines, damaged equipment, and caused a steep increase in subsequent cleaning and maintenance costs, leading to a complete failure in wastewater treatment! Such cases are not uncommon in actual production. Once the wrong chemicals are used, not only will the initial investment in chemicals be wasted, but there may also be risks of environmental penalties and production stagnation. III. Use correct posture to let the medicine “show its magic” 1. Accurate differentiation to avoid misuse: Carefully check the product label and instructions when purchasing to confirm the ion type; strictly partition the storage area and affix clear signs to prevent taking the wrong one. 2. Phased application: If two types of chemicals are required in the wastewater treatment process, they must be added strictly in accordance with the process requirements at different treatment stages. For example, anionic
polyacrylamide is first used for preliminary flocculation, and after sedimentation separation, cationic polyacrylamide is added in subsequent steps for further treatment. 3. Ensure proper equipment cleaning: When changing the type of chemicals, it is essential to thoroughly clean the dosing equipment and pipelines to prevent any residual chemicals from reacting and affecting subsequent usage effectiveness. The correct use of water treatment chemicals is like a precise “chemical symphony”, where each chemical has its own “exclusive stage”. Although both cationic and anionic
polyacrylamides can assist in wastewater treatment, the secret to maximizing their effectiveness is to “keep the well water and river water separate”! Forward and remind colleagues around you not to let the chemicals “fight against each other”, and let’s work together to safeguard an efficient and stable wastewater treatment process!
