Several primary functions of
polyacrylamide in the printing and dyeing industry: 1. In the textile industry,
polyacrylamide flocculants serve as sizing agents and finishing agents for fabric post-treatment, producing a protective layer that imparts softness, wrinkle resistance, and mould prevention; 2. As a post-treatment agent, the
flocculant prevents fabric static electricity and provides flame retardancy; 3. When employed as a dyeing and printing auxiliary, it enhances product colour fastness and vibrancy, and may also serve as a non-silicon polymer stabiliser for bleaching processes; 4. Crucially, it purifies wastewater discharges from the textile dyeing and printing sector.

The characteristics of printing and dyeing wastewater are also highly distinctive: Printing and dyeing wastewater is produced in substantial volumes, with each tonne of textile processed requiring 100–200 tonnes of water, 80–90% of which becomes effluent. Textile printing and dyeing wastewater is characterised by its high volume, elevated organic pollutant content, significant alkalinity, and considerable variability in water quality. It ranks among the most challenging industrial effluents to treat. The effluent contains dyes, sizing agents, auxiliaries, oils, acids and alkalis, fibrous impurities, sand particles, and inorganic salts. The key to coagulation treatment of textile dyeing wastewater lies in selecting an appropriate flocculant. Commonly used flocculants for dyeing wastewater treatment include the earlier aluminium sulphate, ferric sulphate and ferric chloride, alongside the later cationic
polyacrylamide. These
flocculants demonstrate excellent treatment efficacy for wastewater containing water-insoluble dyes such as disperse dyes, reduction dyes and sulphur dyes, achieving high removal rates for COD and colour. Usage: 1. Dissolution method: Prior to use, dissolve solid particles in a 1‰–5‰ aqueous solution to enable rapid efficacy. 2. Addition of dissolution solution: Typically, add an aqueous solution of approximately 0.5‰–1‰. However, where suspension concentration is high and viscosity is elevated, it is advisable to further dilute the aqueous solution to 0.1‰. This facilitates mixing and ensures full efficacy. 3. The molecular weight of cations is lower than that of anions, resulting in viscosity that is also lower than that of anions.
